11 AugVroom!

So the paperwork is all in and we just have to get to Brisbane and collect it. This is the new baby that Afta and I have just purchased together. Technically it will be his baby and I am getting his other baby to drive. It’s very exciting stuff :D

I shall violate his Impreza with Hello Kitty number plates!

05 AugTop 5 Hello Kitty Personalised Plates

Once again I find myself procrastinating at work (just for something different). To alleviate boredom, I am currently playing around with the ppq.com. Now I was never much into personalised plates – until Queensland Transport released their Hello Kitty one last year. If I was to have a car, how the fuck could I resist! Having a look at available combos and seeing what looks good. Of course, I could always go for the standard initals + year of birth, but how fucking lame is that. So I have formulated my current top 5 of Hello Kitty Personalised Plates.

#5 – SUG33

Sugee! It means awesome in Japanese (well, it’s another way of saying sugoi, which means awesome). It fits in with the whole Japanophile thing and ‘awesome’ is one of my buzz words. However, I don’t like the double 3s and to be honest I’d prefer SUGo1, which is unavailable.

#4 – 74RTI

Well Afta does (affectionately) call me Elentar-t-i, so Tar-t-i would be the shortened version. Plus I am a massive tart, but it could be a little trashy.

#3 – HNT41

Hello Kitty & Hentai – what an amusing contrast. They just seem to go so well together :D Slightly obscure, but I’m cool with that.

#2 BEW85

( . Y . )

#1 – MMP13

This is my absolute favourite that I have come up with so far. I have been in love with the combo for ages. MMMP13 would be better, but I couldn’t get that on Hello Kitty plate. Simply awesome, IMO. Sugoi!

04 Aug5 Random Tuesday Updates

Just a few things because I can’t be fucked writing a post:

- Someone who runs a Doctor Who group on Flickr asked if I’d be happy to add my Dalek photo to the group.
- Still no bike tubes. This makes me very mad.
- I currently have a crush on DCI Gene Hunt in ‘Life on Mars’(UK). I don’t feel so creepy now that I found someone else who does too – even if it is my mum.
- I have absolutely no food at the moment except a 1L tub of chocolate icecream and half a bag of frozen raspberries. Awesome dinner, but not exactly nutritionally sound.
- Afta and I are formulating awesomely awesome plans of awesomeness. Few people know already, but will post news on this topic as things transpire.

02 AugEverybody Hurts Sometimes… Even Daleks.

Kommando on Zgeek is currently running a six-week photo-a-week competition. For each week he will post a different theme or challenge and at the end of the six weeks, the entries will get voted on. This week we had to work on “Steel Pumpy Monkey – This week your subject will be an inorganic structure. Enhance its inner robot.”

Had a few ideas for this one, which I never got around to doing, however I had a brainwave when I was getting dressed this morning to go to work and here was the end result -

Dalek

Was pretty happy with how it turned out. I also had a few other pics that I took, which were good, but not as awesome.

Can’t wait to see what next week’s theme is :D

02 AugShinies of the Laptop Variety Pt 2

Updates with picture-y goodness :D

Called her Elebereth, which is Elentari in Sindarin and another title for Varda (which also happens to be the name of my PC)

01 AugShinies of the Laptop Variety

  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T6500
  • 4GB RAM
  • 320GB HDD
  • 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
  • 15.6″ LCD screen
  • HDMI output
  • Integrated webcam and mic
  • CREATIVE Sound Blaster X-Fi MB software
  • Shiny backlit keyboard
  • 802.11a/g/n WiFi adapter
  • Bluetooth
  • 9-cell battery (plus a spare)
  • Free MS Office 2007 Home & Student Edition
  • Free bag
  • other awesome shit

My aim is to use it mostly for my photography and art stuff and I am currently snuggled up in bed with it hooked up to my Wacom, just doodling away.

I don’t think I’ll be doing much work this weekend ;)

28 JulGood Golly Miss Molly

Been a bit quiet the last few days as I have been in Sydney for my lovely Afta’s birthday. Had a most wonderful (but short) time with him, his family and all our all our awesome friends.

Back at work today and I have been procrastinating by fiddling around on my Flickr account. This has made me realise that I have posted a lot about my riding but nothing about my other hobby, photography. I figured that here would a good opportunity to show off some of my pictures, which will also make a good filler for my days when I can’t be bothered posting anything.

So to start off, here is a picture I took on the weekend of Molly. She actually belongs to friends of Afta’s folks but she are currently in their care and is pretty much a part of the family. She’s such a gorgeous creature who is so friendly and loving. Although, I think Afta spoils her far too much.

23 JulOne of those moments

Something I read on Facebook today (having a highly productive day at work, as you can tell) made me remember something my little brother once said to me dad. It was one of those moments when you don’t know whether to lol or go ‘awwww, cute’, and I thought I would share it.

Dad was sitting out in the lounge room one night watching TV, when my brother, who would’ve been in very early primary school at the time, came out in tears and asks him, ‘Dad, am I gay?’

My father has always been one to approach things logically, and go step by step through a problem, analysing it until he reaches a solution.  So hes responds to my brother with, ‘Do you know what gay means, Joe?’

My brother stops crying for a moment and says to him ‘It’s when one boy loves another boy, isn’t it?’

Dad answers, ‘Yes, so what makes you think you’re gay?’, to which my my brother responds, ‘Because I love you, Dad?’ and bursts into tears again.

My father, while very caring, can be a bit no-nonsense, so his reaction wasn’t all that unsurprising. He gives my brother a hug and says, ‘Don’t be stupid, boy! Now get to bed.’ and sends him on his way.

I lol’d.

21 JulOn A Scale of 1 – Pro

After spending a fortune on gear over the last week, I am starting to look like I am good and shit! Took Sophia out for a spin last night and I really noticed to difference since I first took her out.

Here’s some things that I have reflected on and learnt since my initial ride:

  1. Lycra, lycra, lycra! That is all.
  2. Always keep striving to go faster, harder and longer. That bitch arse ride will soon become ez-mode.
  3. Never rely on anyone else to have a pump suitable for Presta valves.
  4. You can achieve anything with warm hands and protected eyes.
  5. Super short laces are a far more cost effective than brand new shoes.
  6. Fluoro hoodies are both cute and functional for late afternoon rides.
  7. Suck it up and take the hill. The easy route is full of pot holes anyway.
  8. Cookies are most definitely better post-ride.
  9. If you are going to push to break the pain barrier, be prepared for the agony after the endorphins wear off.
  10. More lycra!

I just had some more stuff arrive today. Really looking forward to installing it and going out for another ride this afternoon. Now that I have my cycle computer/heart rate monitor, I can finally start logging my rides too, yay \o/

17 JulThe Joys of Radiography: Drunkards

Work experience students, don’t you love them? Every now and then we get them through our department. Generally it’s just for 15 mins on a Friday afternoon when they’ve been with Allied Health all week and are running out of things to see. Technically we’re Medical Services, not Allied Health, but it’s all healthy-type stuff that isn’t doctoring or nursing, I guess. Anyway, I just had one of my flatmates, who is a podiatrist, just bring this week’s student around and asked me to tell her about the joys of Radiography.

So what is something really awesome about Radiography? One of my favourites is x-raying all the drunks who have hurt themselves doing dumb shit. Even if the injury doesn’t end up being that interesting, the patient’s certainly are. A few of the memorable ones I’ve done include the guy who decided that climbing on to the roof to fetch his football while intoxicated was an great idea and fell off and broke both his arms. Or the guy who was taking a nap in the back of his car when his mate decided to take it for a joy ride, crashed into a tree and he broke his femur (he was so drunk that they had to wait 2 days to take him to theatre to put a nail in it). Or the guy who got hit in the face at the pub by a girl, and spent the night in the ED blubbering about it, while his girlfriend (who was seemingly out of his league) fawned all over him.

But the most recent one I’ve had was last Friday night. At 2 am the doctor-on-call rung me up and apologetically asked me if I could come in to do a hand (I was actually still up and playing WoW, but I didn’t tell him that ;) ) The guy had apparently had gotten into an argument at home and decided to go out on the piss to calm himself down. Clearly it didn’t work too well because he ended up in the ED with a rather swollen looking hand after punching a wall. The whole time I was x-raying him, he was half falling out of his chair, couldn’t keep still and kept saying, ‘I’m sorry I’m so drunk’. It was actually quite adorable and so I just smiled and reassured him that I didn’t mind (secretly I was laughing my arse off, in my head). It turns out, (shown in the images below) that he had dislocated his 4th and 5th metacarpal, which is quite easily fixed – a little bit of local, a good hard tug on it, whack a plaster on and it’s good as new! Despite it not being all too serious, the doctor decided to keep him in over night, just so he could sober up a bit *giggle*.

As you can tell, I take great delight in recalling these stories. The best part is watching the looks on people’s faces when they see some of the x-rays that go with them. As I watched the work experience student cringe every time I brought up a new x-ray, I knew that there was no chance she’d be binge drinking anytime soon!
